Vincent Price

Following Rod Serling, I conjured up another face from classic horror, Vincent Price, as seen here in the guise of a mad scientist.

Tools for Tomorrow

INSIDE:

To the Dad who was always on the cutting edge of technology
and prepared us with the tools we’d need for tomorrow.

Recently I began thinking about how essential my parents were in helping me to recognize quality storytelling.

During the Nineties there were a great many spectacle driven movies that I felt I needed to and threw a fit when my parents would deny them to me. Looking back at how lackluster many of these titles were, I’ve come to realize how my parents were really protecting my taste palette from being desensitized by these flash-in-the-pan flops.

As alternatives, my Dad introduced me to cerebral science fiction features like “Planet of the Apes” and “2001: A Space Odyssey”. These were things I certainly wouldn’t have willingly watched on my own and were partially responsible for forming much of my current sensibilities.

Given how my career has been molded by such moments, I wanted to celebrate my Dad’s choice in sci-fi cinema on Father’s Day and honor the heritage of my Geek patriarch with a card that made reference to something other than Star Wars.

Originally I was going to have multiple mini-illustrations from many sci-fi movies but decided to narrow my focus on just one film that played to Dad’s love of cutting edge technology.

Calvin's Canadian Cave of Cool Comic Cover

My latest commission for Kal and his blog "Calvin's Canadian Cave of Cool". The cover features a lot of things that he loves; comic book covers from the 70s, outer space adventuring, Lasers, Jetpacks, Selena Gomez and his cat, Admiral Fluffy, all attacking the deadly cephalopod menace!

This was a real joy of a project to take on since it proclaims my own love for old comics, but also gave me a chance to real dig through my archives and find all manner of crazy inspirational images. The works of Wally Wood were particularly influential. Here are a few examples to give you an idea were I was coming from with my thought process.

Looking back, it seems like this could be seen as a more refined version of my old college piece, "Dex Deadfall: Astronaut Archeologist". I guess the influence followed me all these years later.

Dex Deadfall: Astronaut Archelogist!

A name courtesy of the Action Hero Name Generator, Dex is inspired by the great science fiction art of the past; Al Williamson , Wally Wood, and Frank Frazetta in particular.

Being the last project for the semester it feels a bit rushed in terms of composition and looks very busy. At least I had the opportunity to play with Photoshop colors alongside my traditional brush and ink.
