Spider-Man and My Amazing Friends

This week I tried to capitalize on the release of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" by doing daily drawings of the American Arachnid. Unfortunately, sketching such detail in colored pencil was rather frustrating as the waxy tip did not hold a point for very long.



Instead, I found I had much more fun sketching people at a group get-together. Drawing from life is strangely refreshing and therapeutic, despite how much these guys move around.

 

 

Party Progress

Now we're cooking with gas! With I've got the house rendered and the background bits in place, I can devote my attention to the fun figures.

Study Sketches

Once again its time to test my skills in quick gesture and observational drawing, courtesy of the lingering and mingling at the end of the Bible Study that I attend.

 The Note on the left says "Josiah kinda looks like Macaulay Culkin."

 

Notice how Jared's face gradually becomes more chiseled with each drawing.

Go Gokaiger!

In order to keep my figure drawing skills sharp, I usually warm up with daily gesture drawings. Since the start of the year I've switched from sketching models in photos to watching episodes of Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger (which will hopefully be coming stateside as "Power Rangers: Pirates" soon)

The series features a multitude of various characters in skin tight colorful costumes leaping, running, kicking, punching etc. Its very much like watching a live action comic book, and briefly pausing the action allows me to reference cool action poses. Its been a great exercise in speed, proportions, rhythm and even lighting.

I've been wanting to post sketches for some time now, but I always kept putting it off, so what you'll be getting is some of the better samplings. Looking over them recently just shows the kind of improvements that I've made, albeit subtly, in a relatively brief amount of time. Sunday Sketches

Earlier this week I started work on a new illustration for SleepCare involving people sitting at a dinner table and I spent most of the weekend sketching how make a sitting scene look dynamic, or at the very least... interesting.

So when I was asked by some friends if I wanted to have lunch with them at the mall food court this afternoon, I just couldn't help but observe how people sat casually in chairs and just how different it was from the reference photos I was looking at over the weekend were people were posed in chairs.

Gesture drawings are something I've kind of slumped on the past year now that I'm out of school so spontaneous sketches like these taken from outside the home, especially fast and with a pen felt like a breath of fresh air and quite a rewarding experience. I wondered why I didn't do this more often, and then I had to get gas for my car and one glimpse of those prices reminded me why I don't get out much.

Distant Friends

Some time ago I thought of composing a series of illustrations based on the humorous ancedotes from my college years and the people I knew there. Wanting to keep the memories of such unique people still fresh in my head, even a year after I had last seen any of them, I used photos taken my myself and ones exchanged on Facebook to recall the look of the shapes, walks and smiles of those I was privileged to know and call my friends. The project itself was rather nebulous and grew rather taxing, so I let it lie.

I drew many pages, but these are the few which I considered most sparing of any embarrassment.
