Frozen: Arendelle Spring

Inspired by spring in Michigan.
(It would seem the cold doesn't bother Anna either.)

EDIT: One of the disadvantages to drawing digitally is that I'll often find myself leaping to render my idea as it first pops in my head, to jump on that idea while it's fresh and new instead of thinking through and sketching other possible interpretations. For example, this was the original drawing, that once finished, I realized, it wasn't really working.

Another advent sketch, this one of Olaf living in up in summer!

Let it Snow!

It's December and time to welcome that seasonal snow!

Actually, this was supposed to be part of a series advent sketches, but I only made a handful before other projects swept in and took over. You'll likely see some of these other cards throughout the month.

Hey, Sean Connery, what's your favorite Oscar-winning Disney song?

Penciled Packages 2: The Quickening

While I'm glad to have time to commit to long term projects, I'm also getting in the habit of sketching small and speedy.

Once again, I'm embellishing some Christmas packaging. This time around I wanted to make the drawings more dynamic, play to the shape of the box and not be so tied down to the material I was using for reference.

Color is magic!

Llama Llama Red Pajama. That's new to me.

"Miles from Tomorrowland" is also new to me.
What little I've seen looks better than the "Tomorrowland" movie.

Sophia the First, What's on second, I don't know is on third...

Ariel is "Under the C". Get it?

Cedar Point Caricatures: August Edition

By the end of the summer I had really gotten comfortable in my position at the park and relished being able to draw caricatures with wild pop culture themed bodies!

Survey Corps from Attack on Titan

Anna and Kristoff from Frozen (with Olaf and Sven)

Raptor Trainer from Jurassic World

Rick and Morty

Ghostbuster and The Silver Surfer

Let it Go! (Elsa Step by Step Process)

This past Christmas I received several markers as gifts that I've been itching to test out, especially since some of them were very specific shades.

I wanted to do an illustration of Elsa since I had requested many of these colors with her in mind. I worked from this promotional image. While I would have liked to have made something original, I was more concerned with coloring rather than composing at the time.

Spot Blacks with a Faber-Castell Pitt Pen and technical pens for the small details

I bought an "Eggshell" Prismacolor marker to better match her platinum blonde hair. I also finally got my chance to try out Copics with a new "Skin White" marker that looked to match her pale tone more so than the "Light Peach" Prismacolor I had been using previously.

Add in some classic comic book Kirby Krackle!

Snowflakes courtesy of a Uniball brand White Gel Pen
(I don't know how I ever lived without this!)

And the final, with some blues over certain snowflakes, a few grayscale touch ups, trim the excess around the edges and I'm done. Whew!

Sketch you later!

Secret Santa Sketches

One of the local elementary schools asked me to make some sketch cards for the kids as part of a Secret Santa exchange.

Hiro and Baymax

Groot and Rocket

Groot and Rocket

All those who chose to oppose his shield must YEILD!

First time I've drawn Anna.
Seriously I've gotten more requests for Sven than her!

Dave... or maybe Steve

Olaf

Rapunzel, another Disney first for me.

Wolverine as Michael Keaton's Batman!

Starfox and Wonder Man as Harold and Kumar.
This sketch is actually for the Michigan Comics Collective Secret Santa Exchange.

Now I want to hear from you! Which card is your favorite and who would you request for a secret Santa sketch?

Barnes & Noble was kind enough to host the Michigan Comics Collective for their three-day "Hunger Games" event, just a week before Turkey Day. How timely!

Penciled Packages

Christmas is coming sooner than I'd like. Not because of any cynicism, but rather because it means I now have a ticking clock when it comes to Christmas themed projects.

One person who seems to be ahead of the game is my neighbor Shannon, who asked if I would draw some characters on the wrapping for some presents she is going to mail her nieces and nephews.

Working on midtone paper and colored pencil was very different from the kind of sketches I've been doing this summer, but it offered a variety of textures and shades I wouldn't have been able to try otherwise.

Doc McStuffins, thats a first

Elsa, I just can't seem to let her go
