Spider-Man and My Amazing Friends

This week I tried to capitalize on the release of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" by doing daily drawings of the American Arachnid. Unfortunately, sketching such detail in colored pencil was rather frustrating as the waxy tip did not hold a point for very long.

Instead, I found I had much more fun sketching people at a group get-together. Drawing from life is strangely refreshing and therapeutic, despite how much these guys move around.

Party Progress

Now we're cooking with gas! With I've got the house rendered and the background bits in place, I can devote my attention to the fun figures.

Now I want to hear from you. Is there any pop culture character you'd like to see me draw? What to you think of the party couples new pose?

  1. You should try some Verithin colored pencils, they're less waxy and work quite nicely for more precise work. http://www.dickblick.com/products/prismacolor-verithin-pencils/ I picked up a handful of them on sale at the school store and find I'm very glad to have them at times!

    1. Oh, I've seen these before. Maybe I'll invest in some the next time Michaels has a sale. Thanks!

  2. Personally I'd love to see you draw She-Ra or Wonder Woman. I don't know if you have done that before, but I would love seeing that! Or really any female from the X-Men. I adore your work, I think it is fantastic. I don't know if I ever asked you this, but what do your friends and family think of your work and talent? I hope that is not too personal a question, I am just curious.

I also like the progress with the party! It is really coming together! My goodness, Erik, this is so cool! I hope that you have been doing well and that your week will be a good one. Talk to you soon!

    1. Just looking to gauge my audience. Since most of my commenters are people from the Cool and Collected community I've been thinking I may want to increase the pop culture pieces, so I've been trying to figure out were to start. Sounds like 80s/90s comics and cartoons are were its at! Once again, I thank you for your continuing support!

Oh no, how my friends and family think of my work isn't too personal. I was very fortunate to have parents who have been very supportive. They recognized my love for drawing at a young age and encouraged me to continue, but knew I'd need more than just raw talent to succeed, so they set me up with all sorts of extracurricular fine arts classes that really honed my skills.

My Mom was a teacher in the projects for years and developed quite the work ethic that she made sure to instill upon both her children. My Dad works in Marketing and Advertising and has been indispensable to helping me on the business and connection side of things that I would have floundered on my own.

As for friends, since Midland is a small community with the local chemical plant as our biggest business center, most of my peers are engineers and scientists who are impressed easily enough, but don't have much to say other than "thats cool" or something to that effect.

While the Internet does present a great deal of online community I do hope to one day be able to branch out find a niche of artistically inclined peers who I might be able to work off of in person.

  3. Like the party scene. Looking good. Looks like the lady is intrigued by what that young man has to say. Maybe even a bit smitten with him. Ahhh.. young love.

The sketches are awesome. The dude sitting at the table (girl standing nearer) is my fav.

Here's my suggestions.... John Candy characters!

    1. You've always had such great input on the body language. Thanks. I've done quite a bit with this couple since then and am eager to show off.

Brandon holds remarkable still most of the time. He may be someone I want to hang around more.

I was thinking about doing "Jack" characters this week given the League's new theme, but I'll certainly keep "John" in mind.
